Daring To Hope Again

Our sermon this week explores 2 Kings chapter 4, where we encounter the Shunammite woman and the prophet Elisha in a story that speaks directly to fear about hoping again. The narrative unfolds with a wealthy woman who extends hospitality to Elisha, and in return, receives a prophetic promise of a son despite her husband's old age. Her immediate response reveals something profound: 'Don't mislead me. Don't get my hopes up.' How many of us have been there? We've prayed for something, believed for something, held onto a promise, only to watch it seemingly die. This woman's journey from fear to faith, from a dead child to miraculous resurrection, mirrors our own spiritual battles with trust. The story challenges us to examine where we've given up hope, where we've stopped believing God can move in impossible situations. The image of Elisha stretching himself out over the dead boy, face to face, hands to hands, becomes a powerful metaphor for revival itself. True spiritual breakthrough requires us to stretch beyond our comfort zones, to press in when nothing seems to be happening, to pray again when the first prayer seemed unanswered. This isn't about blaming ourselves for past disappointments, but about positioning ourselves for the next move of God.
